Local tip
A sea dip between sauna rounds can make the beach setting part of the thermal experience, with cold-water facilities available as an alternative.

Beach Box Spa is an all-year-round sauna spa set directly on Brighton beach, behind the Volks Railway Workshop at Banjo Groyne. Its focus is thermal bathing rather than food or conventional beauty treatments, with wood-fired saunas, sea air and time for cooling between sessions.

The spa has four distinct sauna spaces. Leil is a converted horsebox sauna for six people, while Löyly is an aspen-lined eight-person sauna with views across the water. Lotta is a nine-person cedar sauna with panoramic sea views, and Pirtis is a two-person sauna available for private hire and private sauna-master treatments. The different sizes and formats allow for shared sessions, smaller gatherings and more private experiences.

Cooling facilities include cold showers, a bucket shower, an ice bath, a cool plunge pool and a slipper bath. Changing rooms, outdoor seating, a fire pit and drinking water are also provided. Felt sauna hats are available for head protection during the hotter parts of a session. With the shore only a short distance away, sea swimming can form part of the hot-and-cold routine, subject to individual comfort and conditions.

The atmosphere combines the social side of public sauna bathing with space for quiet relaxation and digital downtime. Natural materials, open-air cooling areas and the beach setting give the experience a straightforward, informal character. The venue suits people interested in sauna culture, cold-water dipping, body care or a shared wellness session with friends, as well as those looking for a private thermal treatment.

Optional in-sauna treatments add a more ritual-led element. The spa menu includes natural body treatments such as face masks and salt scrubs, along with aromatic ice-ball rituals designed to release scented steam over the sauna rocks. Private sauna-master sessions can also introduce guided heat, steam and traditional whisking techniques.

Beach Box Spa is located at Behind Volks Railway Workshop, Banjo Groyne, 285 Madeira Drive, BN2 1EN. The combination of wood-fired heat, outdoor cooling and direct access to the shore makes the setting central to the experience.
